Let's preserve the history of Latvian underwater sports! We invite Latvian underwater sports veterans or people who know underwater athletes to apply. Latvia has a relatively rich experience in the field of underwater sports - our predecessors trained underwater orienteering, underwater shooting and in underwater fast swimming. We want to preserve the experience of these sports veterans by creating a series of memoirs and also a film about these people - Latvian underwater sports veterans.
We are interested in things related to the history of scuba diving in Latvia - in the form of memory stories, old photos, old documents, diplomas, awards and anything related to scuba diving in Latvia.
Diving The team has already contacted several Latvian underwater sports veterans and in the near future we will visit them and tell our readers about this visit.
The beginnings of underwater sports in Latvia
- Valentin Paul – Diving Association Dzelmes founder, organized the first underwater competitions in Latvia and the Baltics.
The newly established Latvian Diving Association "Dzelme" (1933-1938) held the first diving competition in Bulduri, behind the pontoon bridge, not only in Latvia but also in the Baltic States, on July 9, 1933 at 16:00.
As mentioned in the press, such competitions have so far been held only by eccentric Americans. However, racing is of great practical importance. The competition was attended by 10 of Latvia's most famous divers.
The diving competition program included
- Speed competition, overcoming a distance of 40 m in a diver's suit underwater and pulling forward with the help of a rope;
- Competition for special tasks on the riverbed;
- Drowning rescue.
The race will end with various demonstrations, from the practical activities of divers.
