How side view sonar works
The following is a video tutorial on the principles of side-view sonar, which is shown on Humminbird side-view sonar units, however, the sonar principles are also applicable to other and professional marine and deep water sonar units.
Lateral sonar structure
The side-facing sonar consists of an underwater antenna, which looks like a rocket with a tied cable, which is immersed in water and towed behind a cutter or ship. The sonar is immersed up to 1/3 of the depth below the wedge for a more accurate and clear image.
The data from the underwater antenna goes either to the data processing equipment, which immediately displays the underwater information on the screen, or to a computer, where a special program simulates the underwater map, in parallel with the marine satellite map.
When collecting sonar data, land transport water transport is slow - 1-3km per hour. The lateral sonar readings and accuracy are affected by current, including propeller current, electromagnetic interference from other equipment, and other conditions.
