Animals without a shell or skeleton rarely leave traces in geological sediments. Therefore, the more than 500 million-year-old jellyfish fossils recently found are to some extent a sensation. The discovery was made in Utah, USA, and can be said to be the oldest and best-preserved fossil of these animals.
Jellyfish are one of the stages in the life cycle of stinging cavities. Most likely, this group of animals was one of the first to separate from polygons. The new discovery shows that jellyfish have changed very little over millions of years.
