What does the PADI Divemaster degree mean?

The first level in the course of a professional diver, with the PADI Divemaster certificate you can be both an underwater guide and lead groups of underwater divers underwater, as well as perform certain underwater diving training processes under the supervision of a PADI Instructor. The PADI Divemaster course provides excellent practice working with divers and deepens the theoretical and practical skills gained in the PADI Rescue Diver course. An EFR course certificate completed within the last two years is required for the degree.

What can PADI Divemasters do?

Although the word “Divemaster” makes you think you are the boss of everything, the rank of Divemaster actually is PADI Professional the first rung of the ladder. Divemasters usually assist instructors in classes and lead certified divers on underwater adventures. If they work in the shop, dive managers often fill tanks, load equipment, check in divers, and help with other important tasks.

In addition to the above activities, diving masters Divemaster can also:

  • Assist PADI instructors with instructional and non-instructional diving activities
  • Run Discover Local Diving programs
  • Accompany certified PADI divers and divers during your dives
  • Assist PADI instructors with Discover Scuba Diving® (DSD) programs
  • Help divers refresh their skills with the PADI ReActivate® program
  • Teach to discover snorkeling and PADI Advanced snorkeler
  • With additional training, PADI Divemasters can lead Discover Scuba Diving experiences in a pool or confined water. They can also guide divers who have successfully completed the DSD Guided Dive Experience once participants have completed their first dive with an instructor. DSD participants must be under the indirect supervision of an instructor and the maximum ratio of participants to PADI Professionals must not exceed 2:1. Any dives supervised by a divemaster must take place within 14 days of the DSD.


Latvian diving instructor Valters Preimanis, who teaches at diving club DIVINGS, was awarded the PADI Elite Instructor Award (2021 PADI Elite Instructor Award) for his contribution to the development of diving sport in 2021. Instructor Valters Preimanis was awarded the PADI Elite Instructor Award for 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021.
