PADI Tec 40 technical diving course - the first step in the world of deep technical diving

The PADI Tec 40 Technical Diving Course is the first of three courses that make up the full Padi Tec Deep Diver course. It is designed for divers who want to learn the basics needed to perform a decompression dive to a depth of 40 meters.

What you will learn

  • How to plan and execute a decompression dive using decompression software and dive computers
  • How to use one decompression gas cylinder with a maximum of 50% oxygen (EANx50)
  • How to use standard technical diving equipment including Twinset, decompression cylinder, BCD or Wing & Tec harness, computer, slates, dive light, inflatable DSMB and compass

Prerequisites to start the TEC 40 course

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You must be PADI Open Water Diver certificate or its equivalent from another organization
  • You must be PADI Advanced Open Water Diver certificate or its equivalent from another organization
  • You must be PADI Deep Diver certificate or its equivalent from another organization or at least 10 dives up to 30 meters
  • You must be PADI Enriched Air Diver (EANx) a certificate or its equivalent from another organization or at least 30 logged dives, including at least 10 dives using EANx and 7 dives deeper than 30 meters
  • You must submit a medical form signed by a doctor (we provide a sample)

Padi Tec 40 the technical diving course is the first of three courses that make up the full Padi Tec Deep Diver course (Tec 40, Tec 45 and Tec 50) and the course consists of four dives.

What you will learn

Use decompression software and dive computers to plan and execute a decompression dive to a maximum depth of 40m with no more than 10 minutes of total decompression time
Use one decompression gas cylinder with a maximum of 50% oxygen (EANx50) to add conservatism to the required decompression schedule.

The diving equipment you will use

Standard configuration of technical scuba equipment, usually rear mounted Twinset (two cylinders) or side attachment. PADI standards allow a diver to complete Tec 40 course using one large capacity rear mounted cylinder IE Leisure setting, single stage but recommended Twinset configuration.

  • Double/Twin Cylinders with Insulator Manifold or Side Mounted
  • Single hose primary and secondary regulators configured with a 2 m long hose
  • Single stage decompression cylinder
  • A BCD or Wing & Tec BCD with excess buoyancy, usually provided by a double chamber
  • Computer and Backup Computer/Depth Gauge and Bottom Timer
  • Slates to record decompression information and backup tables
  • Environmentally friendly wetsuit. If you use a diving dry suit, you must be trained and experienced before using it on this course
  • Scale system
  • Plate for recording three decompression tables
  • Dive lights are recommended
  • Inflatable DSMB and reel
  • Compass
  • Two cutting tools
  • Mask and spare mask

Study materials required for the TEC 40 course

The Padi Tec Deep Diver Crew Pack includes a manual, dive planning sheet, dive planning checklist and additional equipment setup and core skills DVD.

The manual covers the necessary theory, technical diving 'terminology', breathing gas planning, decompression procedures and emergency procedures. You will use the same Crew Pack, if you decide to register for the remaining courses up to Tec 50

The knowledge of the TEC course is useful in underwater expeditions and work missions

Prerequisites

  • 18+ years
  • Certified Advanced Open Water Diver level (or have a qualifying certification from another organization)
