Description
The Vesala Sea association actively organizes underwater cleanups to clean the Baltic Seabed from waste, paying special attention to "ghost nets" - abandoned fishing nets that pose a serious threat to the marine ecosystem.
These efforts are a significant contribution to the protection of the marine environment and include:
- Elimination of “ghost networks”:
- The association's divers, using specialized equipment, identify and lift abandoned fishing nets from the seabed.
- These nets often continue to catch marine animals, causing them injury and death.
- Other waste collection:
- During underwater dredging, other waste from the seabed is also collected, such as plastic waste and other objects that pollute the environment.
- Cooperation with other organizations:
- The Vesala Sea Association often collaborates with diving clubs and other organizations to increase the effectiveness of the efforts.
- For example, there is frequent cooperation with the professional diving association "PADI", and cooperation with "Lieli Talks" is also being established.
- Surveying historical sites:
- The society's divers survey the bed of the Gulf of Riga and find many historical objects, about which information was passed on and informed. National Cultural Heritage Administration.
