However, sometimes divers encounter a phenomenon called \u201c<strong>freeflow<\/strong>\u201d \u2013 uncontrolled airflow from the second stage. This situation can be not only unpleasant, but also dangerous, as it quickly depletes air supplies. Understanding the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/daivings.lv\/shop\/nirsana-kategorija\/udenslideju-regulatori\/\">diver&#039;s regulator<\/a><\/strong>, the causes of \u201cfreeflow\u201d and their prevention are essential for the safety of every diver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kas_ir_regulatora_%E2%80%9CFreeflow%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>What is a \u201cFreeflow\u201d regulator?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFreeflow\u201d is a condition where the flow of air from the regulator\u2019s second stage is not interrupted, even when the diver is not breathing. This manifests itself as a continuous flow of air bubbles from the mouthpiece. If the first stage delivers too high an intermediate pressure, this can cause the second stage valve to open and \u201cfreeflow\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Incorrect adjustment or wear of the second stage regulator<\/strong>: Changes in regulator performance are most noticeable if the second stage is improperly adjusted or requires maintenance.<sup>6<\/sup> Incorrect adjustment can lead to insufficient \u201ccracking effort\u201d which causes \u201cfreeflow\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Insufficient spring tension<\/strong>: A second stage internal spring (bias spring) ensures that the valve is hermetically sealed when not in use. If the spring tension is too low, the valve may not be able to close completely, causing air leakage and \u201cfreeflow\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lever height too high<\/strong>: The height of the second stage lever refers to its resting position relative to the body and diaphragm. avoid adjustable wrenches to prevent damage to parts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure that the first and second stages are properly \u201ccycled\u201d to ensure the seats are properly secured.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is strongly recommended that routine maintenance and repairs be performed by factory-trained and authorized technicians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Always check that the first stage intermediate pressure (IP) is stable and within manufacturer specifications before adjusting the second stage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Second stage adjustment<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Venturi adjustment<\/strong>: On the surface or while submerged, use the \u201cMIN\u201d or \u201cPre-dive\u201d position to prevent unwanted \u201cfreeflow\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Adjusting the cracking effort<\/strong>: Adjusting the actuation effort (e.g., with an external knob or internal seat adjustment) can reduce the risk of \u201cfreeflow.\u201d Higher actuation effort can prevent \u201cfreeflow\u201d in turbulent environments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Lever height adjustment<\/strong>: Adjusting the lever height (using the orifice position) affects the risk of \u201cfreeflow\u201d. Setting it too high can cause \u201cfreeflow\u201d. Specialized tools are used for this purpose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Seat adjustment (orifice position)<\/strong>: Turning the orifices \u201cin\u201d increases spring tension and actuation effort, reducing the risk of \u201cfreeflow.\u201d Turning \u201cout\u201d decreases tension and actuation effort, increasing the risk of \u201cfreeflow.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Action in case of freeflow<\/strong>:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If freeflow is caused by purging, it can be stopped by slightly blocking the mouthpiece.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If freeflow occurs due to too high an intermediate pressure, the second stage will start to flow uncontrollably.
