This time, with genuine satisfaction, we would like to share exciting news from the expeditions of the \u201cVesala J\u016bra\u201d association.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our own Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Riga are full of stories hidden beneath the waves. As a result of the persistent work of our divers, we have made a significant discovery \u2013 two shipwrecks, most likely sunk in the last century, have been identified! Each wreck is like a time capsule, providing evidence of a certain period of history, shipbuilding technologies and human destinies. These two wrecks are special because they are relatively well preserved and, importantly for training, lie on their keel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Zvejas_Tralis_%E2%80%9CSelga%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>1. Fishing Trawl \u201cSelga\u201d<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wreck is located <strong>22 meters deep<\/strong> and has tilted to starboard. Its length exceeds <strong>25 meters<\/strong>Our initial research suggests that this has been <strong>small-sized refrigerator trawler type \u201cSelga\u201d (project 728A)<\/strong>Such vessels were built at the Padomsk Fishing Shipyard from 1972 to 1985 and were intended for fishing with bottom and twin trawls, as well as for transporting and transferring the catch in refrigerated form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Technical specifications confirmed by our findings:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Length:<\/strong> Approximately 24.07 meters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Width:<\/strong> Approximately 6.06 meters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Board height to upper deck:<\/strong> 3.10 meters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Draft:<\/strong> 2,395 meters<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Main engine:<\/strong> 300 horsepower (Make: 6NVD 26A-2)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Load capacity:<\/strong> 26 tons<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Autonomy:<\/strong> Up to 12 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Built:<\/strong> It is estimated that approximately 12 units of this type were built.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine \u2013 every detail of this ship tells the story of the development of the Soviet fishing fleet and the difficult work at sea in the last century. The wreck of the \u201cSelga\u201d is a great opportunity for our students to get acquainted with ship construction, orientation to larger objects, and technical diving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/daivings.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/selga_ch-1.jpg?v=1749492176\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/daivings.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/selga_ch-1.jpg?v=1749492176 350w, https:\/\/daivings.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/selga_ch-1-300x171.jpg?v=1749492176 300w, https:\/\/daivings.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/selga_ch-1-18x10.jpg?v=1749492176 18w, https:\/\/daivings.lv\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/selga_ch-1-230x131.jpg?v=1749492176 230w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_%E2%80%9CLiellaiva%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>2. \u201cBarge\u201d<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wreck is at a shallower depth \u2013 <strong>15 meters<\/strong>It is approximately <strong>15-20 meter long metal structure boat<\/strong>, which is surprisingly well preserved and rises about 2 meters above the sandy bottom. Although the superstructure has not survived, <strong>the deck at the bow is perfectly visible<\/strong>, with all its elements \u2013 deck bollards, cleats and two anchor chain stoppers. Two square hatches are also visible on the bow deck. Unfortunately, the stern of the boat is sunk in the sand and is practically not visible. Interestingly, in the middle part of the wreck, on the left side, on the bottom there are pieces of metal of various sizes, which are most likely detached parts of the wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-pale-cyan-blue-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cLiellaiva\u201d is an ideal site for beginner and intermediate divers to practice navigation, site exploration, and underwater photography. Its relatively shallow depth allows for longer dive times and more detailed exploration of the wreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kapec_sie_atklajumi_ir_svarigi_udenslideju_apmacibai\"><\/span>Why are these findings important for diver training?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Associations &quot;<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/daivings.lv\/goto\/http:\/\/vesalajura.lv\"  >Vesal Sea<\/a><\/strong>&quot;The main goal is not only to discover and document underwater history, but also to train new divers. These two wrecks offer excellent opportunities for practical training:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Orientation and navigation:<\/strong> Students can learn to navigate larger objects, using boat and wreck structures as reference points.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Object research:<\/strong> Learn to document discovered objects, take measurements, and observe the degree of preservation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rope work and safety protocols:<\/strong> Learn to dive safely around wrecks using ropes and other safety gear.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Underwater photography and video:<\/strong> Wrecks are great subjects for developing underwater photography and video skills.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Understanding history:<\/strong> Learn about the history of ships, their functions and significance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Nakamie_soli_Arhivi_un_talaka_izpete\"><\/span>Next steps: Archives and further research<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our work with these wrecks does not stop at discovery and initial identification. To more accurately determine the history of the ships and the circumstances of their sinking, we need <strong>further detailed research and archival work<\/strong>This includes both searching for documents in maritime archives and possibly contacting historians and specialists.
